We had a one-week reservation made through Vacation Rental Pros, and we experienced a nightmare. Upon arrival, we noticed maintenance issues – broken boxspring mattress, unclean bathroom. We woke our first morning to find my granddaughter’s purse completely chewed through, and feces of rats scattered throughout. The purse was less than a few feet from her head while she slept. We called Vacation Rental Pros early Sunday morning. We were told someone would be sent to address the situation. No one came on Sunday, but the pest company did arrive Monday, and placed rat traps. We were told to call them back if needed. That night, the noise of the rats was so loud, my son-in-law stayed up all night, moving traps and actually caught one of the rats. The next morning, we contacted VRP again. After being placed on multiple telephone holds and talking to several people that could only send e-mails, we finally reached someone who appeared to be attentive. He said management would call us by the end of the day. The day came and went with no further contact. Rat feces could be found in practically in all rooms. Food had to be kept in containers and clothes inside closed suitcases as rat feces had been found inside of our suitcases. Our greatest concern was my youngest grandsons, 1 and 4, in this very unhealthy environment. We cleaned everything before use. It was impossible to sit on the furniture as it was covered in feces. The legs of the sofa on the third floor had been extremely chewed by rats. We learned Vacation Rental Pros was aware of this ongoing rat problem for months prior to our arrival. When the pest control company was present, the individual had given us his card and told us to call him if anything occurred again. When the activity occurred overnight, we contacted him. He had been told not to return and to handle the issue after we left. That evening (Tuesday), we returned to find large rats scurrying with one rat running across my son’s foot. Wednesday morning, we woke to more rodent activity after listening to it all night, and we called Vacation Rental Pros again. After an hour of being on placed on hold, ignored or transferred, we spoke to member of “Management”, and we followed this call with an e-mail of pictures of the rat activity. We had spent Sunday through Wednesday fighting the rodents and attempting to reconcile the problem with management. On this call, we informed the manager we would be leaving on that day instead of Saturday and we were supposed to called the following day about compensation. We could no longer deal with this. We are experienced travelers, but we have never encountered the environmental health issues experienced or a sheer lack of professionalism, unresponsiveness and overall deceit.
