Taste of History
Flea markets date back to the 1800’s. The First Flea Market in America: While the exact location remains unknown, the first American flea market is believed to have opened around 1873, somewhere in the state of Texas. The flea market originated in Paris, France though. There is a general agreement that the term ‘Flea Market’ is a literal translation of the French marché aux puces, an outdoor bazaar in Paris, France, named after those pesky little parasites of the order Siphonaptera (or “wingless bloodsucker”) that infested the upholstery of old furniture brought out for sale. The largest flea market in the US is in Brimfield, Massachusetts. Brimfield is synonymous with flea markets. With 5,000 dealers stretched over 21 fields along one mile of Route 20 in Brimfield, Massachusetts, the annual flea markets are believed to be the largest and oldest outdoor antiques shows in the country.
