A Cemetery – also known as a burial ground, gravesite, or graveyard, is a place where the remains of dead people are buried. We can’t know for sure when our ancestors began to intentionally bury the dead, but archaeological findings and the belief of many scholars do take us back some 100,000 years. Some claim that the first garden / rural cemetery in the United States was in the Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, Massachusetts in 1831. Memorial parks are similar to modern cemeteries. They often have landscaped plots and flat bronze markers instead of headstones. Upright monuments are typically used to display history. The goal of a memorial park is to create a peaceful, natural, and dignified atmosphere – for visitors to meditate and honor the memories of their loved ones.

A proper burial can provide a sense of closure for family members by preventing them from witnessing decomposition and giving them a place to visit their loved one. Some consider visiting a grave to be a sacred event. That helps them feel connected to their deceased loved one. Burial can also be a way to show respect for the body and its soul. Burying the dead may be an early form of religious practice. This practice that suggests people were concerned about what happens after death.
