Here’s something you may not have known….
Taste of Florida History – The term carport comes from the French term porte-cochère, referring to a covered portal. Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term when he used a carport in the first of his “Usonian” home designs: the house of Herbert Jacobs, built in 1936 in Madison, Wisconsin. Frank has strong ties to central Florida. Lakeland, Florida to be exact. If you are not familiar with this American architect, he was a pioneer of organic architecture who designed some of the most iconic buildings in the world. He was more than just an American architect, he was an educator, a writer and an amazing designer. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a period of 70 years.
In 2012, the Florida Southern College Historic District in Lakeland was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for being the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. Repeatedly called out as one of America’s most beautiful campuses, this is his only executed design for a college campus. The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center serves as the interpretive hub for education concerning the 13 Wright-designed structures at Florida Southern College. The Center offers guided walking tours through the Usonian Faculty House – a showcase of Wright’s residential vision for our campus – and the Geico Gift Shop.
Florida is home to the largest single-site collection of Wright architecture in the world.
