Barns are a Symbol of Hard Work and Pride.

Every man with property needs a barn. Whether you’re looking to store hay, horses or that old truck you refuse to let go, you need somewhere to keep your “stuff”. Barns can be custom made to fit any size, color or floor plan. Hiring a licensed builder makes a world of difference. Barn kits are an option for DIYers. They provide all the building materials and the instructions you need to build. You can typically expect the kit to cost anywhere between $10-$60 per square foot. Whereas custom built barns cost $15-$200 per square foot including labor. HOWEVER, unless you’re an experienced carpenter, or general contractor with a ton of experience there’s a good chance you’ll end up messing up. At that point you’re either going to have a “not so perfect” barn that you’ll have to live with or eventually be forced to pay to have your imperfections fixed.

Make sure whoever builds your barn is licensed, insured and experienced.

Why don’t people tear down old barns?

Old barns, mark and make the past present. There is a beauty to be found in old barns. A beauty unlike anything you’ll see today. Structures made sturdy, with wood, by the hands of farmers of the past. These beautiful structures are a part of history. Many still holding on and barely standing today. The barn is a symbol of hard work, pride of place and self-sufficiency with traditional rural values held by the American farmers. In the bible, the barn represents the kingdom of heaven that He has been preaching about. The bible says in Luke 12:16-21 King James Version (KJV) – And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

There’s more than one style of barn – Which design works best for you?

You have the property, you have the “stuff” now you need a barn. Or maybe, you’ve outgrown your current barn and need something bigger and better. It’s best to do some research before getting started. Some of the most recognized designs include; Gambrel Roofed Barn, Shed Row Barn, Dutch Barn, Round Barn, English A-Framed Gable Barn, Corn Crib Barn, Peaked Prairie Barn, Bank Barn, Tobacco Barns and Monitor Barns. Although the Gambrel Roofed Barn has been the most sought after design for centuries, and that’s due to it’s double slope and architectural design on each side of the roof, the most popular barn style in Florida would have to be the block barn. Block barns are very popular in Florida because of their strength against hurricanes, extreme winds and tropical storms. FYI: Hiring a licensed builder makes all the difference in the world.
