There are over 300 charter schools in the State of Florida. You might ask, why should I enroll my child in an alternative school versus the traditional public school system? Although the opinions are mixed, the educational benefits and disadvantages weigh differently amongst the Florida population. The choice is solely yours. Charter’s do receive government funding however they operate independently within the state school system in which county it is located. Classrooms do tend to have less students and better teacher student ratio at Charter schools. In 1996, the Florida Legislature authorized charter schools as part of the state’s K-12 public education system. Alternative schools are tuition-free, publicly funded, nonsectarian schools that operate under a contractual agreement (i.e., charter) with a sponsor. With a no red tape education curriculum and greater community involvement whereas the Florida public school system has benefits as well.
