Sea Shell Capital of the World

The Sea Shell Capital of the World is located in Lee County, Florida on a tiny island called Sanibel. Sanibel Island is known for its abundance of souvenir shells and brings in millions of visitors year-round to collect the unique treasures that have washed up ashore. The 12 miles of gorgeous coast-line on Sanibel is perfect for shelling. On any given day you can find colorful coquinas, conch shells, limpets, lightning whelk shells, cockle shells, tulip shells and olive shells. Sand dollars are in the plentiful as well. There are over 250 types of shells that will have you doing the Sanibel Stoop during your stroll along the shore line. Never heard of the “Sanibel Stoop”? It’s the famous saying for when you’re bent over at the waist searching for seashells! Be prepared to do the stoop! Inside Tip: Don’t come empty handed because you WILL find shells. Make sure to bring a bucket, net bag or something to bring your souvenir’s home.

Best times to go shelling

Although any time is a great time to go shelling on Sanibel, the best times are typically early in the morning, after a storm or during low tide. If you’re just coming over for the day to collect shells and sight see, keep in mind that there is a cost for crossing the Sanibel bridge. Currently it is $6. Beach parking on Sanibel is $5 an hour. ( Please check current rates before traveling ) There are a few places to park and play on the island. Bowman’s Beach has the largest parking lot whereas Blind Pass allows few cars but is a great place to fish! The causeway is free to park however it is really not the beach per say. You can normally find a parking pot by the lighthouse as well but timing is everything. The speed limit on the island is 35 at the most! Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to park and enjoy the day. There is no “better” place to collect shells on the Sanibel. Every inch of the tropical surroundings makes Sanibel Island the best shelling spot in North America.
