The county seat, Blountstown, makes up the majority of these parts. Other communities such as; Altha are also nearby. For those of you who didn’t know – here’s a taste of history. The county was founded in 1838 and was named for John C. Calhoun, a member of the United States Senate from South Carolina and the seventh U.S. vice president. Originally, the county was located between St. Joseph Bay and the Apalachicola River, and the county seat was in St Joseph. The town of St Joseph – founded in 1855 – was the largest community in Florida at one point. It was located on the shores of St Joseph Bay before being abandoned after less than eight years. A yellow fever epidemic in 1841 and then a storm surge in 1844 destroyed the town.

The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, M & B Train Depot Museum and Magnolia Square, are a great place to visit while in the area. Not to mention the abundance of kayak landings, boat ramps, parks, hiking trails, and the Blountstown Greenway. If you enjoy the peace and quiet that comes from living in a small town, this is a great place to be –  live, work, play and relax.
