Taste of History: Settlers were living in Macclenny as early as the 1820’s however, the town was named Darbyville back then and the yellow fever epidemic in 1888 killed most of the residents. The community slowly started coming back around in the 1900’s and sawmills, turpentine, lumber and land were the leading industries within the area. There is no water ( lakes, ponds, rivers or streams ) throughout the 4.74 square miles that make up this small town but there are great fishing spots and waterways nearby.
