Have you ever wondered how many beaches there are in Florida? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Florida has 567 beaches altogether with a total beach length of about 1,147 miles. That’s a lot of sandy shores! With Florida being a peninsula and surrounded by water on three sides, it’s just a short drive in any direction before running into water. Not all beaches are created equal tho and the Florida beaches are a great example of that. Why is that? best beaches in Florida

Depending on where you visit in the sunshine state will decide the type of scenery you will receive. Example; the beaches in the panhandle will be a bit different than the beaches in the Keys and although Siesta Key has the softest, coolest sand in the state, you can drive an hour away to Venice beach and the sand is darker and harder to the touch. Why is that?

Sugary, White Sandy Beaches – Why is that?

The sand’s unique composition, color and grain size are a result of the source rocks it came from, but also a result of coastal processes that modify the sand over long periods of time. Corals and shells control the texture and color of sand. Most beaches in Florida are made up of quartz crystals mixed with coral and shells. However, this is not the case on beaches such as Siesta Key, Caladesi Island, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Clearwater, St. Pete. and Fort Myers Beach. These areas are known for it’s soft, white sugar sand shorelines.

Venice Beach is known for it’s shark teeth. I enjoy visiting this beach the most due to the fact that it’s not very crowded and I keep busy gathering sharks teeth while my younger kids are playing in the water and making sand castles and my older boys are fishing on the pier. It’s a win win for everyone in my family.
