What’s going on in; Glen Saint Mary, MacClenny, Oulstee, Sanderson, & Taylor

If you’re looking to get away from the fast paced city life and breath in some fresh – country air, take the back roads to Baker County. This area in Northern Florida, just over the Georgia line makes up roughly 589 square miles of peace and quiet. Take a walk in the woods. Go camping, boating, fishing, hiking – go explore nature or just relax. That’s what the residents do. All 28,000 of them. You’re won’t find an array of shopping malls, franchise stores, or high rise buildings in Baker County. You’ll find the complete opposite. You’ll find families who spend time together, backyard BBQ’s, local mom and pop shops, and businesses that have been around for generations.

Whether you’re a local, just traveling through or looking to check something off your Florida Bucket List… there are plenty of places to explore in the sunshine state.

Battlefield Olustee, Florida

Olustee Battlefield Re-Enactment – February

The Olustee Battlefield Re-Enactment is held each year in February. It takes place at the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park located at 5890 Battlefield Trail Road Sanderson Florida 32087. Hear the cannons fire, smell the black powder, taste hard tack, watch battlefield surgeons perform their skills, listen for the thundering hoofbeats of the Calvary, the muffled drums, and the pounding of boots, learn about the battle through the voices of reenactors portraying their ancestors. Throughout the weekend, more than 1,000 demonstrators will present living history impressions of military and civilian life at the time of Florida’s largest Civil War battle. The living history weekend features a Civil War-era battle reenactment, music concerts and crafts, lectures, battlefield surgical practices and the lives of both white and black civilians during the war will be portrayed by re-enactors. Military camps and drills by infantry and artillery are scheduled throughout the weekend. Put this event on your Florida Bucket List.

Baker County Fairgrounds

The Baker County AG Fair is the biggest little fair in Florida. Held annually in October, this week long event brings in residents and visitors from all over the sunshine state. Carnival rides, Beauty Pageant, Rodeo, Swine Show, Steer Show, Goat Show, Concerts, Fair Food & Family Fun! The Baker County Fairgrounds have additional events happening throughout the year. St Marys Shoals Park

St Mary Shoals Park

St. Mary Shoals Park is known as the hidden jewel of Northeast Florida. It’s where the locals go for fun. It is 2,568 acres of trail systems for ATV, dirt bikes, horses, cyclists, walkers and hikers. The park opened in 2009 and has operated through various grant funding including the Florida Communities Trust, and FRDAP. As well as the Recreational Trails Program. The property is located along the Florida-Georgia border and is flanked by the St. Mary’s River on its northern boundary. Fishing ponds, pavilions, restrooms, and water access are available for public usage. There is also public access to nearly 2 miles of the tea-stained St. Mary’s River and white sandy shores. Come see what Florida looked like a century in the past.

 

Heritage Park Village MacClenny, Florida

Heritage Park Village – On Going Events

One of the most treasured spots in the sunshine state is located off the beaten path in MacClenny, Florida. The Heritage Park Village at 102 Lowder Street pays tribute to the history of Baker County. Step back in time to a village of historic structures, and store-fronts. Share memories of the pioneers of Baker County growing up in rural Florida. There’s over 5 acres to explore with mini museums. As well as the old Northeast Florida Telephone Company, the Davis Oil & Gas Company, the old Darbyville Jail, a hat shop, pharmacy, and old-fashioned grocery store. Each storefront educates you on the past. Other mini museums include; the Rexall Drugstore, the Blue Haven Restaurant, the turpentine distillery, fabric store, and the Moonshine Garage and Car Museum. By all means, this place should be added to your Florida Bucket List.
