American Alligators in Florida
Does Florida Have Alligators? And if so, where can I find them?
Yes! Of course there are alligators in Florida! There’s over five million American alligators in southeastern U.S. with a quarter of the population being right here in the sunshine state.
Where can you find them? Well… Just about anywhere! There’s over 1 million alligators that live in the state of Florida. You can find them year-round in our lakes, rivers, swamps, marshes and sunning themselves on golf courses! During mating season residents are sometimes lucky enough to find one in their swimming pool or posing for the camera at the front door! Yikes! If you’re looking for a safe place to check out some gators, try our alligator farms and theme parks!
Believe it or not, the largest population of gators are NOT located in Okeechobee! Many would assume that the largest fresh water lake in Florida would be a suited place to call home however, more alligators live in Gainesville than any other part of the state. Don’t get me wrong, Florida has about 30,000 lakes and you better believe there are gators in each of them but according to Florida Fish and Wildlife, Lake George near the St. Johns River in northwest Florida is the most infected lake, with more than 2,300!
